Food: Italian Words & Exercises
There are many words to learn when you want to speak about food, how to cook food, and purchase food. This guide to food vocabulary with exercises and words in Italian will help you speak about different types of food, but also how you cook them and in the sort of food containers there are when you go to the grocery’s store.
An effective way to learn Italian food words is to create a vocabulary chart, such as a tree chart or a mind map with sets and subsets arranged for semantic fields. Start in the centre or at the top of a page with a category like “food types” and link it to different food categories, like dairy and vegetables. Under these categories, write down the food words. When you have reached a satisfactory degree of understanding, increase your vocabulary by moving on to related topics. Here are some suggestions:
- Kinds of food
- Adjectives to describe food
- Verbs for cooking
- Vocabulary for supermarket
To help you get started, below are the most common food-related words.
Copy the words into a notebook and when you come across new words add them to the started list. This way you will have everything at hand to continue studying. Soon you will be able to talk about food and join the conversation about cooking, shopping and nutrition.
